Wednesday Workshop

#LingWiki Workshop – Wikipedia editathon for underrepresented languages and varieties

Facilitator: Gretchen McCulloch (Lingthusiasm)

Date: July 17, 2019

Time: 1-4pm

Location: TBD

Help improve linguistics-related articles on Wikipedia!

Abstract: Wikipedia is the 5th most visited site on the internet, but many of its linguistics articles are incomplete, out of date, or in need of attention from actual linguists. Editing Wikipedia has a tremendous impact on the perception of our field and is useful practice in explaining linguistics in a neutral and accessible manner.

This workshop, led by Gretchen McCulloch, will provide training in editing Wikipedia for complete beginners, plus time and support for independent or small-group editing by beginners and more experienced editors. In honor of the UN’s Year of Indigenous Languages, this editathon will be focusing on articles about under-represented languages, although more junior people or those who don’t specialize in a particular under-represented language are also welcome — we can help you find articles that could use your help.

The edit-a-thon will take place from 1 to 4pm.

IMPORTANT: Bring a laptop or other device to edit on (editing on phones not recommended).
